Deer Hunting with the 250 Savage
Article reviews the use of the .250 Savage for Deer Hunting.
The .250 Savage entered life as the .250-3000 Savage. The name was taken from the fact that the gun shot a bullet at over 3000 feet per second which was a big deal in its time. Though it required a relatively small 87 grain bullet to reach this speed, it was still quite an accomplishment. The venerable 30-30 Winchester fires the commonly used 150 grain bullet at about 2400 feet per second. Today with the much better 100 grain bullet, the 250 Savage still leaves the barrel at about 2800 feet per second. Given the 1000 foot pounds of energy rule of thumb for deer hunting, the 250 Savage carries this amount well past the 200 yard mark. Reloading cartridges for the 250 Savage can push this to 300 yards in modern rifles. Handloaders need to slowly work up their loads to assure safety. All older guns, regardless of caliber, should be checked out by a gunsmith for safety and the old guns should be used with factory loads or mild reloads.
Though the 250 Savage has not remained very popular over the years, it was the basis for one of the most popular wildcats of all time. The 22-250 Remington is one of the most popular varmint calibers in the country. The 22-250 Remington is a necked down 250 Savage that results in amazing velocity. With some loads the 22-250 Remington will break the 4000 feet per second barrier making it an extremely flat shooting varmint rifle. For those that reload their own shells the 250 Savage can efficiently be used for both deer and varmint hunting also.
Savage and perhaps some other still produce rifles in the .250 Savage. However a full sized bolt action rifle in 250 Savage is not ideal in my mind. The 250 Savage is best in an easy to carry gun that is great in the brush and accurate enough for the occasional long shot. In either a Savage Model 99 or another compact rifle, the 250 Savage is still a great deer cartridge. With gentle recoil and more than adequate power, the 250 Savage is a great rifle for beginners or any other practical deer hunter.
