Tree Stand Hunting Tips
Hunting from a tree stand has become the predominant way of deer hunting in many parts of America. Here are some tips on locating your tree stand to improve your deer hunting success.
One common mistake that many hunters make when choosing a tree stand location for hunting is to pick a location that does not block their silhouette. While a motionless hunter with an obvious silhouette will probably not be noticed, even the slightest motion may make the hunter's location quickly known. Some solutions are to use large trees that are wide enough to hide movements, placing the tree stand in thick groups of trees, and to place tree stands with pine trees in the background. Another way of dealing with a silhouette while hunting is to use the stand only in the morning or evening when the sun will not be behind the hunter.
A common location for a tree stand is along trails between bedding and feeding locations. Hunters need to know the area well or scout the land to find bedding areas and do research to find likely food sources during hunting season. When hunting an area without any previous knowledge or scouting, set up on food sources and note where the deer enter the area to feed. The next day locate the tree stand using information from the previous day's hunt. Assuming that the common food source in your hunting area is agricultural fields locating a tree stand along trails near woods based food sources such as white oaks and beech trees can be an added bonus.
When possible, place your tree stand in an area where the deer might stop for a moment. In the absence of something to stop the deer passing through the area, an artificial food source or decoy can be used where legal. With landowner permission gaps can be made in fences, openings in rows of brush, and other changes to encourage deer into certain areas.
Choosing the proper tree stand location can be the difference between a long and boring day on stand and a successful hunt. Don't give up on a tree stand location too soon, but at the same time don't spend your entire season in a place that isn't working out.
