Duck Hunting is a Challenge, but Well Worth the Effort
A description about a hunting trip last year, in which ducks were the quarry, and the conditions were unbelievably brutal.
The day started out like every other duck hunting venture, as I was ecstatic to hear the alarm clock, and didn't need two cups of coffee to get motivated out of the house. I quickly put on my waders, grabbed my beloved Benelli Nova Pump, and rounded up some ammo and my cooler. As soon as I opened the front door, I realized that this day wasn't going to be a walk in the park, as the temperature on my thermometer showed 7 degrees Fahrenheit. The wind chill was twenty some degrees below zero, and I put on an extra sweatshirt and socks for good measure. As I roared down to where my friend keeps his boat, I thought with a laugh, that "I must be out of mind to go hunting with this weather." Sure, it dampened my spirits, but I was going to come home with a cooler full of ducks. That alone was worth the pain of these awful conditions, and ducks tend to be more active when this happens.
My friend was chipper as usual, as we got on his boat, and grabbed his labrador retriever for our journey down the river. We traveled for about fifteen minutes, hitting some swells, and realized that we would have to break up the ice at our hunting spot. It's not often you have to break up a frozen river in Virginia, but I almost felt like George Washington on his trek to Trenton during the Revolutionary War. This didn't escape me as I thought about our first President's house, which is only about ten miles north of where we were. We were able after some hard labor, to get the ice broken up, and place our decoys into their positions. Unfortunately, I had a slight encounter with an underwater branch during this, and fell face first into the Potomac River. The cold was jarring, and I had to warm up on the shore with a portable heater for awhile.
The winds continued to get worse, and we were pounded by bursts of frigid air. At sunrise, I was able to take aim at a Gadwall duck at a range of twenty yards. It was an awesome shot, with a little bit of luck on my side, as I was able to hit the duck as it landed on the water. The dog is usually itching to retrieve ducks, but it took him a couple of minutes to follow our orders. I felt sorry for the poor guy, as he finally went out to get the duck, and didn't want to let go of it when he brought it back. We kept him as warm as we could, and continued trying different calls to bring in the birds. It seems that they didn't want to be flying around, and we only had a few opportunities to take a shot. I missed one as the sun came up, and while I'd like to blame it on poor marksmanship, this disappointment was due to being so cold that I couldn't aim as well as I normally can.
It was a disappointing morning, as we only were able to harvest two gadwalls. While they are good eating, I didn't want to freeze on a riverbank for only two ducks. Thankfully, we were able to watch a Bald Eagle hunting for fish in the Potomac, and the Swans flew by us with a level of grace and sophistication that you don't see with other bird species. After several hours of no shooting opportunities, we called it a day, and collected the decoys and put them in the boat. The ride back was frightening, as the water swept all over us, and instantly turned to ice. A fifteen minute ride was well over an hour, as we had to fight headwinds coming in, along with a battery that couldn't stay properly connected due to ice buildup. There were a couple of times that we had to literally hang on to the boat, and the dog hid under my legs for the entire ride back.
Later that night, as I enjoyed the duck breasts with wine, I thought about this trip. We had made it back safely, and suffered no ill effects, other than being cold. The people who don't hunt, and buy their meats at the grocery store, are missing so much. Sure, they were warm in their living rooms, getting to heat up beef patties in the comfort of their kitchens. Yet, they didn't get to see the Bald Eagles, or live life on the edge a bit. They didn't get to witness a dog that was too cold to jump in a river, or to hang on the boat praying for your life to be spared. Hunting in these conditions is absolutely crazy, and while I might be nuts for enjoying it, you learn a lot from suffering, and appreciate the comforts of life that much more.
