A Basic Duck Calling Strategy for Improved Success in the Duck Blind

Make mince meat of the competition in your local slough by sticking to the basics of duck calling.

They didn'tduck call the right way! Quite simply they did not sound like a duck.

To be truthful, most hunters buy their fancy new acrylic duck call, listen to a couple competition CDs on the web, and call loudly and forcefully at every passing bird. This rarely leads to anything beneficial. These very same hunters would be better served mastering two basic steps.

Identify The Duck You Are Calling

To a certain degree, the hen mallard call will work on most ducks. However, if you can match your calling to the correct duck species you will have much better results. If you see a flock of teal off in the distance, a series of peeps from a duck whistle will produce superior results to a many note highball mallard call. If it is a bunch of ringnecks you spy, you will be better off going with a "burr burr" call than the often heard mallard quack.

Put Down Your Duck Call And Understand The Proper Way To Duck Call

The biggest problem with most duck callers is they call too often and use too detailed calling patterns. Quite simply, a high quality hen mallard quack which can be varied and spaced differently is more effective than any poor version of calling competitions patterns heard across the USA. Take time to master a basic duck quack and try to make it sound like an actual hen mallard. Try to just quack once and see how the ducks react to the basic call. If they start flying your way, simply put down your duck call wait quietly. You are more likely to flare the birds than keep them coming by calling at this point.

Here is an example of how I used the above two basic ideas behind duck calling to put bag more ducks. On a local duck slough many years back I heard the patented highball call from a group of hunters across the lake. I noticed they were calling to a small flock of ducks, but unbeknownst to him they were teal and not mallards. They actually raised up were ready to leave when I called a basic six note "peep" call from my duck whistle. Immediately they turned and barreled right into the decoys. The beauty was after that first set of notes I didn't call any more and yet they came directly in

Continued success in the duck blind requires you to become good at calling birds into your decoy spread. Thankfully, a basic approach is better so just practice making your duck call sound like the simple sounds a ducks make. Do this and you are guaranteed better results.
