Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, Episode 4, in Huntington, West Virginia Sees Rod Willis Helping Out

Did "America's Unhealthiest City" get 1,000 residents to learn how to cook over a week's time, inspired by "The Naked Chef's" bet with a local radio host?

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, Episode 4,Got Marshall University Involved with Better Eating in Huntington, West Virginia

The show's timeline is two months into the "The Naked Chef's" quest to help change the eating habits of this city. Radio personality Rod Willis had Oliver on the program early on in Episode 4, and was rude and negative towards the idea of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. But Willis took Oliver up on his bet for a beer that he could get a 1,000 people in a week to learn how to cook in Jamie's Kitchen. Though the host said it was a joke and didn't expect anyone to show up. The first two days saw no one show up, so Oliver had to come up with an inventive idea. He decides to go to Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia to attract students during Episode 4. A dance instructor Lauren got a bunch of students to learn some dance moves. Later, the students began dancing and then cooking stir fry in the middle of the campus to some modern pop music with just four days left. The students reacted positively to the spectacle, and it helped them get interested in the cook-a-thon the next day.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, Episode 4, in Huntington, West Virginia, Featured Lots of Snapshots

The day of the cook-a-thon, thanks to a media blitz, was well-attended, as Huntington, West Virginia locals learned how to make a beef stir fry with ginger, chili, and garlic. Jamie Oliver had to take pictures to verify his numbers over the day. Many people were first time cooks. His supporters Pastor Steve and some Edwards family members showed up. Radio host Rod Willis came, but wouldn't cook. Hundreds came, but Oliver found that he still needed some 500-plus people to come cook with just 2 days left. So "The Naked Chef" rounded up some blue collar workers at their worksite to help with Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.

Even his gruff "arch rival" from the Huntington, West Virginia elementary school cafeteria, Alice, helped out with some of the cooking after the big cook-a-thon. But 200 people short, Jamie was desperate, and so had to appeal to Rod Willis to help win his bet. The duo went to a mortuary to see some very large caskets for terribly overweight dead people, who have to be transported in a cargo van and have to be buried in two cemetery plots. Willis was moved and went to see "The Naked Chef's" cooking HQ to meet some locals, who are struggling with weight issues, and/or have loved ones who are struggling. Brittney (who was featured in Episode 3 of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution) once again shared her story and really touched the local radio host.

Willis then called for people to come to Jamie's Kitchen "for the good of the city." And the 1,000 people goal was met over the course of the week, thanks to the 100-plus that came on the last day of the bet, including the Governor of West Virginia.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, Episode 4, in Huntington, West Virginia: Willis' Sudden Change of Heart Generates Questions

One really needs to be skeptical of any reality show because there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that the public doesn't see. The one thing that struck me is why did Rod Willis become so open all the sudden to at least hearing out "The Naked Chef" after pounding on the Brit for weeks and weeks? Did anything go on behind the scenes to get Willis to be more open about Jamie Oliver?

Next week, the saga to get Huntington, West Virginia, "America's Unhealthiest City", shaped up continues on Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. My articles on Episodes 1 and 2 can be read here, and Episode 3 can be read here.
