Top 5 Factors to Consider when Purchasing a Ground Blind
This article briefly discusses several factors to consider when purchasing a ground blind for hunting purposes.
First time wild turkey hunters may want to consider taking a ground blind into the woods with them this fall. In my experience, ground blinds are helpful when it comes to issues related to stealth, comfort, gear storage and filming. They are also fairly inexpensive. Prices for ground blinds typically range from $35 to $1,000. Here's what first time hunters should consider before purchasing one:
Size
Ground blinds come in various shapes and sizes. For example, some hunting blinds are nothing more than an umbrella with a camouflage design. Other hunting blinds are miniature, collapsible structures that can accommodate several people at one time. I would suggest that a first time hunter consider purchasing a ground blind that is big enough to comfortably accommodate his body size as well as a portable chair and his hunting gear. That way he doesn't have to sit on the cold, hard ground.
Weight
Ground blinds also vary when it comes to weight. In general, bigger and more complex ground blinds weigh more. As such, first time hunters will want to take into account their physical strength and their endurance level before making a purchase. After all, carrying a 27 pound ground blind onto one's back can be an exhausting endeavor even on a good day. I'd also recommend that first time hunters think about where and when they plan on using the ground blind. For example, hunters that are apt to encounter high winds and driving rain may want to consider purchasing a heavy ground blind for stability reasons.
Windows
In my opinion, the amount of windows a ground blind has is also an important factor to consider when making a purchase. Based on my experience, I would recommend that first time turkey hunters select a ground blind that has windows located on all four sides. It makes it easier to see the wild turkeys. I would also suggest that wild turkey hunters select a ground blind that has gun or arrow ports with shoot-through mesh. I have found that the shoot-through mesh comes in handy when you want to take a shot without making the noise necessary to open the ground blind's window flaps.
Camouflage
A ground blind's camouflage features should be taken into consideration too. First time hunters will want to make sure that they select a camouflage design that will blend in with their hunting ground's terrain. I should also mention that some ground blinds are also equipped with fabric and features designed to block scents and reduce shadows that may spook the wild turkeys. Therefore, first time hunters may want to select a ground blind that has those camouflage related features as well.
Extras
Last but not least, I would recommend that wild turkey hunters select a ground blind that has a few extras. Ground blind extras that I find helpful are ample gear pockets, a carrying case with padded straps and brush holder straps. I like the gear pockets because they allow me to keep my gear off of the floor. I have also found that a carrying case with padded straps makes carrying the ground blind over long distances less taxing. The brush holder straps, on the other hand, are great to have on a windy day. They help to keep any extra camouflage that I may have added to my ground blind set-up in place.
